The Importance of Accessories

Accessorizing is a very important aspect of street style in my opinion, especially for guys. The execution of adding accessories to an outfit can elevate its aesthetics, or ruin it completely. In this blog post, I want to discuss 3 ways accessorizing has helped me enhance outfits or my lifestyle pictures.

1. Match accessories based on style.

This may sound like a given, but the idea of flexing and showing off can sometimes cloud our own judgement. Let’s be real, some of us want to buy nice things so we can flex on social media. Often times, the mistake is in poor execution – by that I mean the accessories and the outfit just don’t go together. If you are trying to enhance your outfit by accessorizing, make sure the aesthetics match. I usually prefer minimalistic accessories because they tend to have a longer lifespan and are more versatile, meaning they can be incorporated into many outfits.

2. Base your outfit around a statement piece.

Statement pieces are bold articles of clothing or accessories that are iconic and often times the most eye-catching piece being worn. With that being said, rarely should you ever be wearing more than one statement piece at a time due to how loud they are – with a few exceptions, notably Supreme (see @miho_umeboshi for reference). I personally like to accompany a bold statement piece with a more toned down look because I want to make that the main focal point with nothing else offsetting the balance. That and I don’t want to catch too much attention in public in fear of getting mugged.

3. There is no lifestyle without style.

Wallets and bags also fall under the umbrella of accessories. Putting them in lifestyle or food pictures helps add a more human element to the composition. You can say this is a very “basic bitch” way of capturing lifestyle, I won’t (and can’t) deny that, but it is proven to work. Coffee pictures, if not taken stylistically, is just an overdone picture with a boring subject – I believe by incorporating an accessory into the shot, it gives my audience a glimpse of what my style was at the time of that photo.

Toronto’s spring temperature can be quite a weird time when it comes to fashion and weather appropriate attire. It is often not quite warm enough to completely ditch our jackets, but at the same time, too cold to for shorts. In this post, I will be sharing an affordable spring-appropriate Rick Owens inspired outfit to hopefully encourage you guys to try something different.

Rick Owens, from my personal experience, is a very unique brand with very few others like it. To elaborate, it is a brand with heavy emphasis on detailing and cutting to present a very modern avant-garde silhouette. That being said however, his pieces are as beautiful as they are expensive – with t-shirts averaging the mid hundreds and shoes starting at around a grand a pair. I understand the price point may turn a lot of people off, but trust me when I say you don’t need to break the bank to recreate the aesthetics of most brands, all you need is are key pieces. In Rick Owens’ case, I believe the shoes are a vital piece to complete the look. For example:

For the foundation of my outfit, I chose the canvas Ramones from Rick Owens’ DRKSHDW line. These shoes are great for an entry level piece because it is an iconic silhouette that can be worn in a variety of styles (if you guys would like a post about it, let me know and I’d be very happy to whip something up). Regarding the DRKSHDW line, it is often associated with materials like denim, cotton, and leather trimmings; as opposed to the main line which is used with more premium materials like leather and silk. To go along with the Rick Owens aesthetics of dark and modern, I paired the shoes up with a Uniqlo Heat Tech, Insight51 mid-length jacket, and a pair of Zara black denim that I got tapered. I feel like this casual take on the brand’s style is a very great stepping stone into this side of the fashion world.

Currently my 2 favourite Instagram influencers that incorporate Rick Owens into their outfits are @dpleung and @ldn2hk. Often times I would pull up their feed while standing in front of my closet for references and ideas. As always, I really appreciate the support from you guys and feel free to let me know your thoughts.

First and foremost, my name is Charles @thatscharles and welcome to my first ever blog post. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I want to start this project as a way to get my name out  and open more doors for my future. If you would like to follow me on this journey, grab some popcorn and get comfortable because this could end wonderfully or like the Titanic (the ocean liner, not the movie).

Expectations

Often times, expectation and reality  do not go hand in hand with each other. If you asked me where I saw myself after graduating from university, I would have probably said teaching or something with music. Here we are now, two years after graduation – I am working a regular 9 to 5, not on bottom of the office food chain, but definitely nowhere close to the top. Through the melancholic lifestyle we call “adulthood”, I found enjoyment out of sharing the attractive aspects of my life (dates, fashion, and travel to name a few) through photography.

Content Creation

The current plan for this blog will is an outlet for me to create content surround male lifestyle and fashion. I plan to split this blog into four categories – Lifestyle (food, dates, shopping, personal care), Fashion (self-explanitory), Travel (vacations and trips), and Advice (personal experiences).

Youtube Channel

Youtube has always been something I really want to try out as it is a very interesting way to showcase who I am to the world. I believe video is a format that can portray real personalities that photographs fall short of. The current plan to start a Youtube channel will hopefully begin by the end of May once I return from my trip to Hong Kong and Japan.
